Words that do not follow the default stress have an acute accent over the stressed vowel. Unlike Portuguese or Catalan, Spanish rules count most syllables in rising diphthongs, not vowels, to assign written accents. A syllable is of the form  XaXX, where  X  represents a consonant, permissible consonant cluster, or no sound at all, and  a  represents a vowel, diphthong, or triphthong. A diphthong is any sequence of an unstressed  high vowel  (? i? or ? u? ) with another vowel (as in  gracias  or  nautico).And a triphthong is any combination of three vowels beginning and ending with unstressed high vowel s (as in  cambiais  or  buey). Hence Spanish writes  familia  (no accent), while Portuguese and Catalan both put an accent mark on  familia  (all three languages stress the first ? i? ). The letter ? h? is not considered an interruption between vowels (so thatahumar  is considered to have two syllables:  ahu-mar). An accent over the  high vowel  (? i? or ? u? ) of a vowel sequence prevents it from being a diphthong (i. e. , it signals a  hiatus): for example,  tia  and  pais  have two syllables each.A word with final stress is called  oxytone  (or  aguda  in traditional Spanish grammar texts); a word with penultimate stress is called  paroxytone  (llana  or  grave); a word with antepenultimate stress (stress on the third-to-last syllable) is called  proparoxytone  (esdrujula). A word with preantepenultimate stress (on the fourth last syllable) or earlier does not have a common linguistic term in English, but in Spanish receives the name  sobresdrujula. (Spanish words can be stressed only on one of the last three syllables, except in the case of a verb form with  enclitic  pronouns, such asponiendoselo. All proparoxytones and  sobresdrujulas  have a written accent mark. Adjectives spelled with a written accent (such as  facil,  geografico,  cortes) keep the written accent when they are made into adverbs with the  -mente  ending (thus  facilmente,  geograficamente,cortesmente), and do not gain any if they do not have one (thus  libremente  from  libre). In the pronunciation of these adverbs — as with all adverbs in  -mente  Ã¢â‚¬â€ primary stress is on the ending, on the  penultimate syllable. The original stress of the adjective — whether marked, as in  facilmente, or not marked, as in  libremente  Ã¢â‚¬â€ may be manifested as a secondary stress in the adverb.Accentuation of capital letters[edit] Further information:  es:Acentuacion de las mayusculas The Real Academia Espanola indicates that accents should still be written on capitals. [21] Differential accents[edit] Blackboard  used in a university classroom showsstudents efforts at placing ? u? and  acute accent  diacriticused in Spanish orthography. In a number of cases, homonyms are distinguished with written accents on the stressed (or only) syllable: for example,  te  (informal object case of you) vs. te  (tea);  se  (third person reflexive) vs. e  (I know or imperative be);  tu  (informal your) vs. tu  (informal subject case of you). When relative and interrogative pronouns have the same letters (as is often the case), the interrogative pronoun is accented and the relative pronoun is not: ? A donde vas? Where are you going? A donde no puedas encontrarme. Where you cannot find me. The use of  o  is poetic for the vocative:  ? O senor! The use of ? o? for the word  o  (meaning or) is a  hypercorrection. Up until 2010, ? o? was used when applied to numbers:  7 o 9  (7 or 9), to avoid possible confusion with the digit 0.The tenth congress of the Association of Spanish Language Academies deemed the use of an accent unnecessary, as typewriting eliminates possible confusion due to the different shapes of ? 0? (zero) and ? o? (the letter). [1] These diacritics are often called  acentos diacriticos  or  tildes diacriticas  in traditional Spanish grammar. Capitalization[edit] Capitalization in Spanish is sparse compared to English. In general, only personal and place names, some abbreviations (e. g. Sr. Lopez, but  senor Lopez), the first word (only) in the title of a book, movie, song, etc. and the first word in a sentence are capitalized, as are names of companies, government bodies, etc. Names of nationalities or languages are not capitalized, nor (in standard style) are days of the week and months of the year. [22] Older conventions[edit] In  Old Spanish, ? x? was used to represent the voiceless palata l sound  /? /  (as in  dixo  he/she said), while ? j? represented the voiced palatal  /? /  (as in  fijo  son). With the  changes of sibilants  in the 16th century, the two sounds merged as  /? /  (later to become velar  /x/), and the letter ? j? as chosen for the single resulting phoneme. When  Cervantes  wrote  Don Quixote  he spelled the name in the old way (and English preserves the ? x? ), but modern editions in Spanish spell it with ? j?. For the use of ? x? in Mexico — and in the name  Mexico  itself — see below. The letter ? c? (c-cedilla) — which was first used in Old Spanish — is now obsolete in Spanish, having merged with ? z? in a process similar to that of ? x? and ? j?. Old Spanish  coracon,cabeca,  fuerca  became modern  corazon,  cabeza,  fuerza. Words formerly spelled with ? ze? or ? zi? such as  catorze,  dezir, and  vezino) are now written with ? ce? and ? ci? (catorce,  decir,  vecino, respectively). The sequences ? ze? and ? zi? do not occur in modern Spanish except some loanwords:  zeugma,  zigurat; some borrowed words have double spellings:  zinc/cinc. [23] The old spellings with ? x? , ? c? , ? ze? , and ? zi? remained in use through the fifteenth century. They were mostly replaced by ? j? , ? z? , ? ce? , and ? ci? , respectively around the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; since the eighteenth century, only the newer forms have been used. 24]  The  first edition  of  Don Quixote  (1605), however, used the conservative spellings. Old Spanish used to distinguish /s/ and /z/ between vowels, and it distinguished them by using ? ss? for the former and ? s? for the latter, e. g. osso  (bear) and  oso  (I dare to). Words spelled in modern Spanish with ? cua? (e. g. cuando,  cuatro, etc. ) were written with ? qua? up until around 1815. [25] In the second half of the 18th century, most double consonants were simplified (e. g. gram matica  Ã‚  gramatica,  addicion  Ã‚  adicion)—but the ? m? of a prefix before the ? m? of a root was differentiated to ? ? (e. g. commover  ;  conmover). And the Graeco-Latin digraphs ? ch? , ? ph? , ? (r)rh? and ? th? were reduced to ? c? , ? f? , ? (r)r? and ? t? , respectively (e. g. christiano  cristiano,  triumpho  Ã‚  triunfo,  myrrha  Ã‚  mirra,  theatro  Ã‚  teatro). The use of accent marks in publishing varies with different historical periods, due mainly to reforms promulgated by the  Spanish Royal Academy. For example, many of the words that are today standardly written with an accent mark appeared more often without it up until around 1880. These include words with final stress ending in  -n  (e. . capitan,  tambien,  jardin,  accion,  comun  Ã¢â‚¬â€ but not future-tense verb forms like  seran,  tendran);[26][27]  verbs in the imperfect tense (e. g. tenia,  vivian);[28]  the possessives  mio  and  mia;[29]à ‚  and the word  dia. [30]  Meanwhile, one-letter words other than the conjunction  y  Ã¢â‚¬â€ namely the preposition  a  and the conjunctions  e  (the form of  y  before an [i] sound),  o, and  u  (form of  o  before [o]) — are generally written with accent marks from the mid-1700s to about 1910. [31][32]  The accent-marked infinitive  oir  begins to outnumber the unaccented form around 1920. 33]  Monosyllabic preterit verb forms such as  dio  and  fue  were usually written with accent marks before the 1950s. [34] The names of numbers in the upper teens and the twenties were originally written as three words (e. g. diez y seis,  veinte y nueve), but nowadays they have come to be spelled predominantly as a single word (e. g. dieciseis,  veintinueve). For the numbers from 21 to 29, the fused forms emerged over the second half of the 19th century. [35]  For those from 16 to 19, the one-word forms took the lead in the 1940s. [ 36]  Fusing of number-names above 30 (e. . treintaicinco,  cuarentaiocho)[37]  is rare. Mexican Spanish  convention is to spell certain indigenous words with ? x? rather than the ? ? that would be the standard spelling in Spanish. This is generally due to the origin of the word (or the present pronunciation) containing the  voiceless postalveolar fricative  /? /  sound or another  sibilant  that is not used in modern standard Spanish. This paper analyzes the novel Blade Runner, through the authors intent and history. This paper examines the novel, `Blade Runner,` through two important questions, what is the authors message and what is the historical importance of this novel? The paper gives a background to the science-fiction plot and the central theme of the book, human identity. It further focuses on the central character, Rick Deckard, and his role central to that theme. The work centers around the question of what it means to be human. San Francisco Police bounty hunter Rick Deckard tracks down renegade androids who have escaped from colony worlds and retires them. The catch is that these androids are so human-like in appearance that no one can tell from looking at them whether they are real (i.e. human) or not and so that Deckard has to determine what they are before he can know whether or not to kill them. He has, in other words, to be able to look into their souls, into their hearts.

Should the Morning-After Pill be Available Over-the-Counter? Last Tuesday, advisors to the Food and Drug administration voted to make the "morning-after" pill available over-the-counter (1). The FDA has not yet acted on this recommendation (1). The morning-after pill is the vernacular term for emergency contraception, specifically, two pills with the commercial name, "Plan B", which have the ability to inhibit and, depending on one's perspective, possibly to terminate unwanted pregnancies. The FDA approved the first version of the morning-after pill for prescription use in 1998 (1). The issue today is whether it should be available without a prescription. The morning-after pill is essentially a high dosage of the birth control pill (2). It can contain progesterone, estrogen, or both (2). . It can prevent fertilization in the fallopian tubes by altering sperm and egg transport or by preventing or delaying ovulation, and it can prevent fertilized eggs, or zygotes, from implanting in the uterus by thickening the uterine lining (1). It is not effective if the process of implantation has already begun (5). The morning-after pill is not to be confused with RU-486, the so-called abortion pill, which terminates a zygote implanted in the uterine lining (1). All three mechanisms of the morning-after pill do not necessarily all take place every time it is used and it is impossible to determine which, if any, of them prevented implantation in any successful case (3). One controversial ethical issue surrounding the morning-after pill is whether it is tantamount to abortion. The debate concerns whether pregnancy and life begin with a fertilized egg or with its implantation. Marriage in Pride and Prejudice

Marriage: The Foundation of Happiness or Misery In today’s world, 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. Although the other 50 percent of marriages don’t end in divorce, not all those marriages are considered an ideal marriage. The concept of an ideal marriage has changed as time has progressed. An ideal marriage in our time is a marriage based on love and family. Most societies have always had the same perspective of an ideal marriage during their time periods. However, in Jane Austen’ Pride and Prejudice, the author defies the view of the ideal marriage of her society by giving her own perspective on an ideal marriage.In the time period of Pride and Prejudice, society viewed ideal marriage as one based on financial stability and social equality. Although Jane Austen’s view of an ideal marriage includes financial and social stability, love was a major factor as well. In the novel, Jane Austen writes about suitable marriages and unsuitable marriages. Alth ough the marriages based on wealth and social class seems suitable through society’s eyes, Jane Austen suggests those marriages to be unsuitable because of their lack of love and happiness.In the novel, many of the marriages reflect society’s view of marriage as a business affair and these marriages are quite unsuitable. Although Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have been married for 23 years, there is no mutual affection between them. Mr. Bennet married Mrs. Bennet because he was â€Å"captivated by [her] youth and beauty†¦ he married a woman whose weak understanding and illiberal mind had very early in their marriage put an end to all real affection for her† (202). Mr. Bennet practically never communicates with his wife and when he does, he teases her for his own enjoyment.Their marriage was solely based on physical attraction which has now faded away. Both of these characters were mismatched in personality and in social class. However, this couple isn’t the on ly unsuitable marriage through Austen’s eyes. Mr. Collins and Charlotte are a couple that exhibits everything Jane Austen is against, which is a marriage solely based on financial and social security. Mr. Collins and Charlotte Lucas married each other just for their own personal gain. When Mr. Collins proposed, â€Å"Miss Lucas, accepted him solely from the pure and disinterested desire of an establishment† (106).Charlotte was 27 and single, her future didn’t look great so marrying Mr. Collins was the best thing that could have happened. She is now set â€Å"considering Mr. Collins’ character, connection and situation in life, [she was] convinced that [her] chance of happiness with him [was] as fair as most can boast on entering the marriage state† (109). Mr. and Mrs. Collins aren’t really a couple based on love and happiness which is what Jane Austen considered suitable. She marries a man who is richer and socially higher than her. Although Mr. and Mrs.Collins’ marriage was considered ideal by society, Jane Austen thought it to be unsuitable. Jane Austen’s ideal marriage is a marriage based on love and happiness but also the aspects of society’s ideal marriage which includes financial and social stability. Mr. Bingley and Jane Bennet and Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy all exhibit the qualities of marriage that are considered suitable by Jane Austen. Mr. Bingley is an extremely wealthy modest man who never judges anyone and Jane is a quiet gentle woman who never thinks badly of anyone.Both these characters are matched perfectly and are one of the rare couples in the novel who genuinely love each other though their love seems very superficial. Although Jane and Mr. Bingley exhibit an ideal marriage, their love has no depth. Mr. Bingley doesn’t seem to care about marrying a woman based on her social class or wealth. He believes love is more important than the match of social class in a marriag e. This is seen when Mr. Darcy convinces Mr. Bingley that Jane doesn’t actually love him and Bingley abandons Jane.Since love matters he doesn’t want to be with someone who doesn’t love him back. However, they had an instant connection: â€Å"it was generally evident whenever they met he did admire her; and to her it was equally evident that Jane was yielding to the preference which she had begun to entertain for him from the first, and was in a way to be very much in love†(16). They are both in love, both happy, and are both financially secure, exhibiting an ideal marriage for Jane Austen. However there was a couple that was more ideal through Jane Austen’s eyes.Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet epitomize the ideal marriage for Jane Austen. At first, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth disliked each other and had no initial attraction towards one another. However, as the novel progresses, their attraction for each other grows and soon they fall in love. Elizabet h isn’t a woman who doesn’t want to marry just for financial security or to be higher within the social class. Her view of marriage is different than her friends; Elizabeth â€Å"had always felt that Charlotte’s opinion of matrimony was not exactly like er own, but she could not have supposed it possible that when called into action, she would have sacrificed every better feeling to worldly advantage† (110). Charlotte represents society’s view of marriage in her time period which regarded marriage as a business affair. However, Elizabeth is one of the few characters to believe that marriage is based on love. Mr. Darcy is the wealthiest man in the novel and with that kind of wealth, he could marry anyone.However, he chooses Elizabeth who is part of a lower class than him proving that he wants to marry Elizabeth because he is in love with her. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth are both physically attractive, intelligent, and they both love each other dearly. T hey are the ideal couple in Jane Austen’s eyes. Jane Austen suggests the marriages that are based on social class and wealth to be unsuitable although they seem ideal through society’s eyes. Austen believed that a suitable marriage had to include love and happiness on top of financial security and social class.However, through society’s eyes â€Å"happiness in marriage [was] entirely a matter of chance† (18). Although in today’s world there are arranged marriages based on social class and wealth, most people in today’s society believe marriage to be based on a foundation of love which links back to Austen’s belief of marriage. Although Jane believed that a suitable marriage had to include love, financial security and physical attraction, today’s society believes a suitable marriage can be solely based on love for one another.
